New Rural and Frontier Healthy Housing Guide for Environmental Health
We have partnered with the National Center for Healthy Housing to improve healthy housing and address environmental health hazards that impact the home, including issues that impact the indoor environment, the surrounding outdoor spaces, and services like drinking water and sanitation. The resources developed and shared here are intended for any community that identifies itself as rural regardless of any formal definition.
Our new Opportunities to Address Healthy Housing Needs in Rural and Frontier Communities: A Guide for Environmental Public Health Professionals provides a comprehensive summary of the environmental and housing risks to health specific to the rural and frontier communities and examples of best-practice solutions to address these unique barriers and risk.
A few of the examples and solutions outlined in the guide include:
- Multi-sector home visits, including paramedicine programs
- Partnerships with utility providers, non-profit organizations, health care providers, universities, and code officials
- Water quality and building code policy
- Community engagement
- Working with community health workers
- Leveraging technology
